Co-Management of ADHD in Northern NSW

In Northern NSW Local Health District, our standard model of care for paediatric ADHD care is co-management.

What is co-management?

ADHD co-management is a collaborative care model where general practitioners (GPs) and specialists (e.g. paediatricians, psychiatrists or neurologists) share responsibility for the ongoing management of a person diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

  • A paediatrican will diagnoses ADHD and start treatment, including working out appropriate doses of medication. They will see the child every 18 months or earlier if needed.
  • A GP takes over regular follow-up and ongoing prescriptions for stable patients.
  • A nurse coordinator may support the process by managing recalls, escalating care and coordinating communication between different health care providers.
