What is a Yarn Up?
Yarn Up events are for Aboriginal families in Northern NSW. They help to raise awareness about immunisation and women’s cancer screenings.
Representatives from women's and children's health services will be at the events to share information. There will also be arts and crafts and wellbeing activities.
We will provide lunch and goodie bags as well as education and resources about:
- immunisation
- breast and cervical cancer screening
- social and emotional wellbeing
- family and domestic violence.
Women can also become a women’s health champion if they would like to help share this information with others.
You can choose to ask questions, share stories, or just listen.
Who is running these events?
We received funding from Northern NSW Local Health District to run seven Aboriginal Women and
Children's Health Yarn Up events. The aim is to support the community to
access immunisations and breast and cervical cancer screening.
We will partner with local groups to promote the Yarn Ups. This includes Aboriginal women’s and children’s and family services. We will also work with Aboriginal Medical Services, craft groups, schools and community centres and supported playgroups or sporting groups.
When and where are the events held?
There will be 7 events held in 2025. The Yarn Ups will be held at culturally appropriate event locations across Northern NSW.
The first dates will be:
- Lismore: Thursday 20th February
- Grafton: Thursday 27th March
- Ballina: Wednesday 30th April
- Murwillumbah: Thursday 8th May
Who can attend?
These events are for Aboriginal women, students and parents/carers of children. Children are welcome to join you and children's activities are also provided.
We create a safe space for all attendees.
